A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to families during the postpartum period. Their role is to assist with the transition to life with a new baby by offering hands-on help, guidance, and reassurance.
The postpartum period can be overwhelming, and a doula provides the extra support you need to recover, bond with your baby, and build confidence in your parenting skills. Families who work with a postpartum doula often report feeling more supported, less stressed, and better able to enjoy the newborn stage.
The duration of support depends on your family’s needs. Some families hire a postpartum doula for a few weeks, while others prefer ongoing support for several months. You can customize the frequency and length of visits to suit your schedule.
A postpartum doula focuses on the entire family’s well-being, offering support, education, and guidance to parents as they adjust to life with a new baby. A nanny primarily provides childcare. Postpartum doulas are temporary support professionals who help during the early postpartum period, while nannies typically offer long-term childcare.
It’s best to book a postpartum doula during pregnancy to ensure availability. However, if you find you need support after your baby is born, I will do my best to accommodate you.
Currently, I am only offering overnight support on a case by case basis. During overnight shifts, I care for your baby while you sleep, assisting with feeding and diaper changes as needed. Typically, overnight support is billed at a higher rate than daytime support. If you are interested in this type of support, please reach out to me directly to discuss.
Yes, postpartum doulas are trained to provide basic breastfeeding support and can assist with latch techniques, positioning, and troubleshooting common challenges. For more complex issues, I can refer you to a certified lactation consultant in Bend, Oregon or surrounding areas.
No, postpartum doulas support families with any number of children. They can be especially helpful for parents with multiples, those recovering from a difficult birth, or families with older children who need help balancing responsibilities.
Choosing the right postpartum doula is a highly personal decision. Most Bend postpartum doula's offer free consultations so you have the opportunity to get to know a few in the area before making your choice. Here are some tips:
Start Early: Begin your search early in pregnancy to allow ample time to find a good match.
Ask for Recommendations: Seek referrals from friends, family, or your healthcare provider.
Interview Multiple Doulas: Schedule consultations to ask about their experience, philosophy, and availability.
Check References: Ask for references from past clients to gain insight into their style and approach.
Trust Your Instincts: Choose someone you feel comfortable with and who aligns with your values and needs.
